VISION IN ACTION AWARD
Dow Kim is a private investor and the Chairman and CEO of PT Sarabau Mas Group and Luckyhill Coal Mining SDN BHD, privately-owned companies in Indonesia and Malaysia, respectively. Mr. Kim is also the President of the Dow Kim Family Foundation, a 501(c)(3) designated private foundation engaged in philanthropic activities in the areas of education, social services, and arts & culture with the sole purpose of helping to better and empower the lives of underserved and under-resourced Korean Americans.
Mr. Kim and the Dow Kim Family Foundation have donated and pledged nearly $2M to several Korean American non-profit organizations since the summer of 2018. Some notable examples include:
In 2018, the foundation pledged the largest multi-year gift to date to KAFSC and made a significant donation towards the construction of the new Rainbow House Shelter for victims of domestic violence.
In May 2020, the foundation initiated the launch of KAFSC’s critical Food Giving Initiative and served as an anchor donor as well as subsequent donor with multiple donations totaling $200,000 to ensure that the initiative can be sustained at least until May 2021.
In 2018, the foundation pledged the largest 10-year scholarship gift to date to the Korean American Scholarship Foundation (KASF) to support scholarships for qualified Korean American students attending institutions of higher education.
In 2018, the foundation made the largest seven-year gift to date to the AHL foundation to support Korean artists working and living in the U.S.
In 2019, the foundation made a five-year gift to the Council of Korean Americans (CKA) to support the CKA-KALCA (Korean American League for Civic Action) Public Service Internship Program to continue building a pipeline of Korean American leaders in public and private sectors.
In 2020, the foundation initiated the launch of CKA’s nationwide COVID-19 fund and served as an anchor donor.
In addition to the work through the Dow Kim Family Foundation and various other philanthropic activities, the Kim Family also supports education through The Dow Kim Family Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship Fund at the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Kim was the Co-President of Global Markets & Investment Banking, EVP, and member of the Executive Management Committee at Merrill Lynch & Co from October 2003 to May 2007. He served as a Trustee of the Asia Society from October 2006 to October 2009 and a Board Trustee of the Marymount School of New York from 2005 to 2014. He received the “Spirit of Asian America Award” from the Asian American Federation of New York in 2006.
Mr. Kim received his MBA and BSE from the Wharton School and completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School. Mr. Kim graduated from Phillips Academy Andover.
